Clay-Clay-Clay

I have never worked in clay before this month.   I am finding that it is a most rewarding experience, digging into this tactile art.  While my first vessels (I am calling them my Troll Series) are nothing short of amateurish and childlike, the experience is exhilarating.   Next week i am going to adventure into giving my self a whirl at the wheel.   I hope this cheers your day, makes you laugh and just remember in the month of October this year the magic words are:

                                                 GO ROYALS

Fragment III

Neo-Platonic decrees

we communicate with

the Divine through Love.

In the eye of Venus

the breath of sea breezes

dances on my skin and

the delicate sounds of

waves caressing the shore,

fills my ears.

I kneel and pay homage

to this angelic face,

immersed in the spirit of Love.

Once upon a time I sat writing in my journal, a poetry of sorts, while hiding from the Florentine sun on the patio of the Hotel Rivoli.  It was a magical time.

Art is...

To talk about paintings is not only difficult but perhaps pointless too. You can only express in words what words are capable of expressing— what language can communicate. Painting has nothing to do with that.

                                              Gerhard Richter

Art is the highest form of hope.

                                              Gerhard Richter

I drew the above portrait of Richter while watching the film Gerhard Richter Painting.    It is one of the few movies that allows you to see an artist process and in this case it is unique and a wonder to watch.I would highly recommend this film to all of my artist friends as well as those who are curious about how a painting evolves.

The Lucky One

I always knew

you would erase me first

but I never thought

it would be this way

out of your control

     you were always the star

the rest of us bit players

     in your private movie

     doing your bidding

where will your mind take you

when it is only you

inside your head?

will I be a shadow

or nothing at all

something that never was?

Are you the lucky one

Having forgotten

what once was

     dessert hikes

     cliff climbing

     skiing meadows

Bruce and Bob long dead

am I the only one

holding memories

     summers by the pool

     candle lit gourmet dinners

     fresh squeezed orange juice

     the bedside breakfast tray?

perhaps you are

the lucky one

For JP upon receiving – Elaine’s Tape

Listening

Track after track

To steal a phrase

Watercolor memories

Of a million

Or maybe

Just forty years ago

Not fair

Not fair of you

To dare

Stir the bottom

Of my heart

Buried emotions

Flailing to the surface

Not fair

Low blow

Wouldn’t act

Couldn’t act

Afraid or incapable?

Reserved or guarded

Or just terrified

Of it being too much

A pot boiling over

A heart bursting

Souls merging

Not fair

Not fair of you

To dare

Stir the bottom

Of my heart

Still listening

Track after track

To steal a phrase

Watercolor memories

Of a million

Or maybe

Just forty years ago

Moon Rise for JP

Coyote and Me

Coyote and Me

Rising above indigo mountains

November’s dessert moon

Casts shadows, lights paths

Through red rock canyons

Bathing me in purity

Coyote sitting on a high rock

Releases throaty moans

Howling into the void

     I howl back

     He howls again

Coyote and me,

     Howling

     Howling

     Howling

Men Never Make Passes...

image

Today is the birthday of the wonderfully malicious, humorous, brilliant writer Dorothy Parker.  It is quite possible that those under 60 may not know who she was, but in her day she was quoted by virtually everyone….even my mother

Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses.

Parker was a member of the famous round table at the Algonquin Hotel in NYC, a poet, a reviewer and writer for the New Yorker, a Hollywood screen writer and she even managed to make it onto the wretched Blacklist during the McCarthy reign of terror.

These are a few of my favorite Parker one liners:

Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.

If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.

I’ve never been a millionaire but I just know I’d be darling at it.

Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves.

And perhaps the most tacky review ever received by the beloved Katherine Hepburn.

She runs the gamut of emotions from A to B.

Happy Birthday Ms. Parker wherever you are.

Absolution

made my peace with God

that sunday morning

while the golden sea

showed it’s’ calm smooth temperament

i watched your nude

aristocratic hips

in the early morning shadows

my heart swelled with joy

the beauty of it all

absolution had been granted

sinners don’t have such mornings

Sketching on my Kindle

When I just can’t seem to get going in my studio i spend some time on my Kindle Fire sketching.   I bought if for that purpose and I have a few drawing programs that range from complex (I am still trying to figure them out) and simple.   The results are sometimes very surprising to me.  For instance one morning at the Philomene Bennett Studio I was doing random sketches of various folks in the class.  When I got home I realized i had this really fun portrait of Philomene so I printed it out, went to the shelf and selected my Crayola Crayons and this is the result.

Afternoon Temptation

image

Afternoon Temptation

Sitting in close proximity

to her subject

This warm July afternoon

The seductive scent of

summer permeating the studio

Tempting lush rosy curves

rising into golden cleavage

Mouth watering in anticipation

of sucking the sweet sticky flesh

between her hungry lips

Juice dripping from her chin

On to the paint stained shirt

The Sweet Dream Peach

gave her all, both

subject and substance

No more to be painted

only remembered

in the poorly

rendered painting.
